My first post on Genesis can be found here, covering the order of creation and the first hint of a triune God, (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.)
Let's be frank, shall we? I find that post a little dry, which is not at all what I intended. Hopefully I won't continue to bore you to tears. I thought it might help if I explain a little bit about where I'm coming from, why I would choose to post on the Bible. After all, I'm no theologian and there are plenty of sites out there written by professionals.
I believe the Bible is true.
I believe it's purpose is to reveal to us the nature of God, the reason for our existence, and His plan for us.
Many have called it a love letter, and in many ways it is God's love letter to His people, calling them into relationship with Him.
I meet so many people who see christianity as a set of rules, the "Thou shalt nots....."
But that's not what the book says. Would it surprise you to know that one of the main purposes of the Ten Commandments is to demonstrate to us that you and I are not capable of living our lives according to them?
Does that surprise you? Is there anyone among us who has not lied? Is there any among us who hasn't loved something or someone in our lives more than we loved God? The point is that we can't live by the rules.
Well, you say, I do know we're all sinners.
We know we're all sinners and then we start the game of rationalization. After all God knows that I really want to be good and I've definitely done more good than bad, right? Can we earn eternal life by good intentions? A loving, merciful God is going to forgive me, right? I'm not as bad as.......
When serious the only people we see in hell are Hitle, Stalin, and murderers. When joking we imagine joining our friends there for a game of cards and a party.
But, God never says he'll weigh the good we've done against the bad we've done.
He only has one measure of our lives, one question to ask.
Do you believe in my Son?
Why is that so important? What about people who were never given the chance? Could it really be that simple, and at the same time so difficult?
There are so many things in the world that demand our attention. Our home, kids, families, spouse, work, politics, sports. How much time do we give to the question of our existence? If we are as the bible says, eternal, how does our time on earth compare to the rest of time we will exist?
Our time here is a blink of an eye.
But, this is the time we have to answer these questions.
In other words, if this story is true, there's nothing more important we can ponder. There's nothing more important to give our attention to. There's nothing more important for us to study and understand.
Why are we here? What does God require of us? Is there evidence that there is one true God? If there is, what can I know about Him?
I certainly don't have all the answers, but I hope it will be interesting to explore the questions.
I also seriously doubt I have the discipline to start in Genesis and go through the bible. We'll just have to see where this leads us. I hope we can all enjoy the journey.
Wow. I step away from the computer for a little bit and when I come back you've switched gears.
If I remember correctly, you used to post on military/conservative type things, but now I see you've joined the God Squad.
You might want to consider joining both "The Blogdom of God" webring as well as "Blogs for God".
Beyond that I have to say that I agree with what you've written and I couldn't have said it any better myself.
I'll look forward to checking in on your exploration.
