Everyone is asking why China would allow the protests against Japan to continue. The content of textbooks seems unlikely, especially if it might lead anyone to review the content of textbooks in China for comparison.
A permanent seat for Japan on the U.N. Security council doesn't seem a likely reason since Beijing already has a veto if they want to use it.
So what would have China worried enough to allow the protests?
Remember Condi was in Asia last month? Could she have whispered in their ears that one possible U.S. reaction to allowing North Korea to go nuclear would be a nuclear Japan, the move that Krauthammer called our trump card? I can imagine the Chinese government wanting a counter move to stir the pot if the possibility of a nuclear Japan has been raised.
You may have seen this, since Glenn linked to it, but Simon World has all the links you could possibly want on the protests in Asia, many from local bloggers with photos.
